In 1995 NASA used the Hubble Space Telescope for an unusual mission. It observed an area of the sky which was seemingly empty, emitting almost no light and radiation. After ten days the telescope revealed: age-old stars and galaxies filled the supposed emptiness. The Hubble Deep Field Image (R. Williams & the HDF Team, NASA/ESA) provided humankind with an unprecedented view into the depth of the universe.
Staring at Empty Spaces deconstructs scientific discoveries by exploring the creation of the Hubble Deep Field image. It emphasizes the carefully planned character of the endeavour, shifting away from viewing it as an accidental moment, and aims to provide a tangible understanding of the image-making process.
Dutch Design Week 2023 is coming up and Staring at Empty Spaces will be exhibited. Come by and say hi! The project can be seen at the Heuvel Galerie, Eindhoven.
